Artist Statement
Robin Daly, Born Tipperary 1981 studied at the Crawford college of Art and Design Cork (2001-2005), majoring in fine art sculpture, received a first class honours degree and went on to do a years postgraduate course in Bronze casting.
While studying at Crawford I worked mainly in figurative bronze sculpture, the college has its own foundry which aloud me to cast my own work from start to finish, researching ideas for a sculpture usually involves a lot of documentation, which develops in the form of sketches and paintings, the bronzes themselves are created by modeling wax into the form I have researched then cast using the lost wax process.
Since leaving the Crawford I have found it increasingly difficult to work in Bronze due to the lack of facilities, and have focused a lot of my attention, for now on painting and research. I find painting to be equally satisfying as sculpture and enjoy the thought of displaying both tow dimensional and three-dimensional pieces of my work within the gallery setting.
Searching for a concept to work with I found myself retreating to the back of my mind in deep thought, it was commented to me that I am constantly in a deep stare, so while I am juggling ideas in my head, my face falls emotionless. I find it interesting that when your mind is most active your body tends to be less mobile. With my work I try to capture stillness of a person mid daydream in some case’s the event or scenery that captivates a person’s curiosity causing them to retreat into thought, to a space between conciseness and slumber.
